5 Week Heeling Challenge
In the next few weeks, we will be launching a new course through the online classroom for competition obedience and rally obedience. In advance, Wags & Wiggles is offering a 5-week free challenge to work on heeling. You are encouraged to ask questions and submit links to YouTube videos for feedback below or in the Free Canine Enrichment Facebook Group. Show us your progress!
These exercises are simple enough for the beginner trainer and valuable enough for trainers wanting to move into Rally Obedience or Competition Obedience.
Here is Week 4 of our challenge. This Free Dog Training exercise on heeling is about getting the dog to the correct parallel position with the handler.
Exercise #1
Next, you will work on getting your dog into the "heel" position while also making sure your dog sits parallel with you. You have already introduced your dog to the platform in the last exercise (Free Heeling Challenge Week 3), using it to help form a correct sitting heel position. This week, the platform will be used to help guide your dog to sit parallel with you.
To begin this exercise, you will stand to the side of the platform and stand still. Then, using your Pocket Hand technique (Free Heeling Challenge Week 1), you will guide your dog to come to your left side and rotate them so that they are parallel with you. The platform will help teach the dog to get in a parallel position with you and have the correct sit.
In the video below, Karina uses Amber to demonstrate how to guide your dog to sit correctly and parallel to you using the Pocket Hand technique.
